What is Cat6a cabling?
Cat6a means Category 6 Augmented. It is copper network cabling specified for frequencies up to 500 MHz and designed to support 10GBASE-T Ethernet over a complete channel of up to 100 metres when correctly specified and installed.
A typical structured channel includes up to 90 metres of permanent cabling and the permitted patch cords at the ends. Outlets, patch panels, connectors and cords all contribute to the performance of that complete connection.
For a business, Cat6a can provide a cabling platform for higher-speed connections while using familiar RJ45 interfaces. The speed you actually achieve still depends on the switches, network adapters, devices and applications connected to it.
When your current wiring makes growth harder
There are not enough connections where people work
A growing team can quickly use the outlets included in the original office plan. Shared printers, new desks and meeting rooms start relying on temporary arrangements. Planned network drops give each area the connections it needs and make future changes easier to discuss.
Important work slows down on the local network
Large shared files, local backups and transfers between business systems can create demanding connection requirements. Before choosing an upgrade, identify the bottleneck with your IT provider. We review the cabling scope against the connection speeds and equipment your business intends to use.
New wireless and powered devices need suitable wiring
Access points, IP phones and some cameras need both a network connection and appropriate power arrangements. Their requirements vary by device. Reviewing the cable routes, switch connections and supported Power over Ethernet needs early helps avoid gaps during the installation.
Your office move is approaching without a clear wiring plan
Furniture, internet service and access arrangements all compete for attention during a move. Cabling also needs time for planning and installation. Agreeing on outlet locations and cabinet access before the fit-out progresses helps your team prepare for opening day.
Cat6a installation services for business premises
CablingHub plans, installs and improves commercial network cabling. Your project may involve a complete Cat6a installation, additional connections or selected upgrades. We define the work around your layout, equipment and business priorities.
Cat6a design and installation planning
We review your floor plan, workstation positions, meeting rooms and shared equipment. The route back to the network cabinet matters alongside the number of outlets required.
Planning also considers installation access, available pathways and likely changes to the space. Discussing those details early helps you decide where to provide connections and where spare capacity may be useful.
Structured Cat6a cable installation
A structured installation brings the cable runs, outlets and patching into an organized system. CablingHub provides Cat6a wiring for commercial locations opening new space, replacing selected connections or preparing for an equipment upgrade.
The complete system should use appropriate components and follow the selected manufacturer’s installation requirements. Cable handling, terminations and routing all matter to the finished connection.
Additional data outlets and network drops
A network drop is an individual cable connection to a location such as a desk, printer area or wireless access point. Extra outlets can support new users and reduce reliance on temporary cables across the workspace.
We discuss where the devices will be located and how many connections each area needs. Share furniture and equipment plans so the proposed outlet positions fit the way your staff work.
Connections for Wi-Fi and PoE business devices
Wireless access points still need a suitable connection into the business network. IP phones, cameras and other supported devices may also receive power through compatible PoE switches or injectors.
We consider the selected devices, their connection and power requirements, cable routes and supporting equipment. PoE planning also needs to account for the specified cabling, installation conditions and cable bundles.
Patch panels and organized network cabinets
Clear patching and accessible equipment make the network easier to support. Consistent labels help your IT provider trace outlets and understand which connection serves each business area.
CablingHub can include patch panel installation and cabinet organization within the project. Tell us about your existing layout and any identification requirements so the installation supports maintenance after handover.
Shielded and unshielded Cat6a options
Cat6a is available in both shielded and unshielded systems. The choice depends on the environment, component requirements, pathways and the overall connection design.
We discuss those factors before selecting the proposed system. For shielded cabling, suitable terminations and relevant bonding arrangements need to be considered as part of the installation rather than as a separate afterthought.
Office moves, expansions and wiring upgrades
A move or refurbishment is a useful time to review wiring while room layouts and pathways are being decided. You may need connections for a new area, selected equipment or a more extensive change.
We consider the work alongside the existing installation and your operating schedule. Agreeing on which connections will change helps your team prepare for any planned interruption.
Testing, troubleshooting and handover
A continuity result confirms a different scope from Cat6A certification. Ask for records showing each link identifier, the selected test limit and the result, with the specified transmission measurements. Confirm whether the report covers the permanent link or the channel. Fluke Networks explains these test configurations, helping your team compare what each proposal will verify.
Discuss the required tests, results and documentation before approving the quote. Appropriate certification considers the specified link or channel, including relevant transmission and alien-crosstalk requirements. Clear labels and agreed records help your IT provider review the completed work.
Should your business choose Cat6, Cat6a or fibre?
Choose the cabling around the application, distance and equipment involved. Cat6 supports Gigabit Ethernet over channels up to 100 metres. Its use for 10GBASE-T is more limited by channel length and the surrounding crosstalk environment, so an existing installation needs appropriate assessment.
Cat6a is designed for 10GBASE-T across a full 100-metre channel when the complete system meets the required specification. That can be useful when planning new commercial wiring for higher-speed connections over the normal building-cabling distance.
Fibre may suit backbone connections, longer routes or equipment that uses optical interfaces. Its speed and reach depend on the fibre and compatible optics. Different parts of your premises may benefit from different cabling solutions.
Plan for the equipment and space you will use
You may install Cat6a before every device needs a 10 Gigabit connection. Confirm the current requirements, expected equipment changes and how long you plan to use the space. That gives you a more useful basis for weighing installation costs against later changes.
Technical basis: Fluke Networks explains Cat6A support for 100-metre 10GBASE-T links and why existing Cat6 needs an appropriate assessment. Match the required application to your installed channel and equipment.
| Cabling option | Application and distance | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Cat6 | Gigabit Ethernet over channels up to 100 metres; 10GBASE-T has shorter, condition-dependent limits | For 10GBASE-T reuse, assess channel length and alien crosstalk. A Cat6 cable label alone cannot confirm that the installed link is suitable. |
| Cat6a | Designed for 10GBASE-T over channels up to 100 metres | Specify the Cat6A link, compatible connectors and patch cords, and the intended test limit. Check the complete connection rather than the cable alone. |
| Fibre optic | Speed and distance depend on the fibre and compatible optics | Match the fibre grade, optical modules, connector type and link loss budget. Include equipment compatibility when comparing the project scope. |
A clear process from site assessment to handover
01
Share your layout and business priorities
Tell us about your location, approximate connection count and intended devices. Explain any recurring problems, planned expansion or move deadline. A floor plan and equipment list help establish the starting point, even if you have not chosen the cabling specification yet.
02
Review routes, outlets and cabinet access
We assess the proposed locations, existing wiring and the path back to the network cabinet. Ceiling access, building arrangements and cable distances affect how the work can be carried out. Reviewing them early helps identify practical requirements before installation.
03
Agree on a clear scope and quote
The proposal should identify the connections, components, termination work and verification included. Discuss labels, reports, patch cords and any supporting equipment. Confirm installation access and tasks outside the cabling scope so your team can assess the complete project.
04
Schedule the installation around your operations
We discuss busy periods, access arrangements and any live connections that may need a planned interruption. Where needed, ask about staged work or alternative installation hours. Coordinate the change with your IT provider and the person responsible for the premises.
05
Install and verify the agreed connections
The wiring and connecting hardware are installed to the approved scope. Cable management and termination requirements are considered throughout the work. Verification uses the method agreed for the project, with any relevant findings discussed before handover.
06
Review the finished installation together
Check the outlet locations, labels and agreed records with your team or IT provider. Confirm what was installed and which connections serve each area. Review any remaining equipment tasks so the cabling can be brought into use as planned.
Commercial Cat6a wiring for the way your team works
An office needs practical connections for desks, collaboration spaces and shared equipment. A warehouse may need cable runs to access points and operational devices across a larger layout. Retail and hospitality locations have their own front-of-house and back-office requirements.
CablingHub works with small, medium and larger businesses across commercial settings. We discuss the devices and activities each part of your premises needs to support, with the proposed wiring matched to the layout and installation conditions.
If your business uses an external IT provider, involve them during planning. Their connection and equipment requirements help define the cabling scope and identify the other work needed for the network upgrade.

What affects Cat6a cabling installation costs?
Cat6a installation costs depend on the number of connections, route lengths, access to the installation areas and the selected system. Outlet and patch panel work, cabinet organization, patch cords and verification requirements can also affect the quote.
A price per connection is useful only when the included work is clear. Ask which components, installation tasks and test results are covered. If the project also needs switches, equipment configuration or internet-service changes, identify those costs separately in the overall plan.
CablingHub offers free cabling quotes, with a site survey where needed before fixed costs are provided. Share your address, layout, approximate outlet count and target date. Tell us about occupied areas or access restrictions so we can discuss a suitable scope.
